Where does the grunge look come from?

Grunge was born in the 60s. Rock bands created this new extraordinary music genre. It was shabby, distorted, melancholic, different.

The worldwide breakthrough of this music style came in the 1980s/90s. Bands like Mudhoney, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam are considered well-known pioneers of the grunge movement. Due to the international attention the bands attracted, their style also increasingly came into focus. There was nothing standing in the way of the commercialization of the looks.

Particularly in the public spotlight was the legendary singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain - who became an idol for an entire generation. The story of the broken rebel who ended his life at only 27 years old was tragic and fascinating at the same time. His voice still touches today and his appearance is unforgettable. Medium-length, stringy hair, a white printed shirt, and a loose cardigan over it – Kurt Cobain brought this look to the stage and looked incredibly cool doing it!

Barefoot shoes between punk rock and metal

It is November 18, 1993. Nirvana records its legendary live album “MTV Unplugged in New York.” Pat Smear wears no shoes, only socks. And Kurt his cardigan, which was later auctioned for a large sum of money.

Fashion is not just clothing or “wearing something.” It is a mirror of ourselves - who we are, what we feel. It is an expression of our inner attitude, our conviction, our state of mind. And sometimes we dress up because we want to slip into the role of someone else. Today inconspicuous and modest, tomorrow like a star.

We can now begin to speculate why Pat wore no shoes or Kurt wore a worn-out cardigan. Was it resistance against the mainstream? The longing to be “different”? Was it a spirit of rebellion and independence? The longing for freedom? Or was it simply tiredness with life itself? Maybe it was just the thought: “Today I don't care what I wear, I'll just wear anything.” Or: “Oh, today I'll just leave the shoes off entirely.”

Whatever the motives were, the style of that time extends into the here and now and is indispensable in the fashion scene. Today, however, the grunge style appears in a more relaxed and everyday version. Nevertheless, it essentially remains true to itself: punk rock and metal give voice to the idea of freedom, and the grunge style gives it a face.

With our Black Edition barefoot shoes, you can perfectly stage the rebel look. Yes, you actually read that right. Barefoot shoes are cool and edgy and fit extremely well into your rock outfit. But with which pieces of clothing does the staging take place?

Barefoot shoes perfect the grunge style

The wardrobe essentials for the grunge style? A destroyed jeans: the more worn out, the better. Is it also holey and/or ripped? Perfect. Add a printed T-shirt and over it a plaid lumberjack shirt or a cardigan, but at least two sizes larger - Kurt Cobain showed us how! Plaid shirt and cardigan not cool enough for you? No problem, a leather jacket, preferably oversized and in biker style, fits just as well.

Ladies can indulge in torn, black tights with a slip dress (A-line dress with ultra-thin straps). Combine the dress with a T-shirt for the contemporary and edgy grunge effect. The main thing is that it looks deliberately casual and authentic.

And what's missing? The style is only perfect with the right black shoe. This is where our ZAQQ barefoot shoes come into play.
